My family was much the same. We never went to the dentist when I was young. My mother lost several teeth by the time she was in her 50s because she came from a very small town and wasn't educated about dental health. I think the thing that saved me was the school I went to had a dental health program for the kids. We were encouraged to brush our teeth twice a day and we were given a flouride rinse to gargle a couple of times a week where the whole class participated. I didn't have my first cavity until I was 42. I have had two cavities in my life, and a couple of painful abscessed wisdom teeth that needed to be pulled. I am now 52.
I was pretty regular about going to the dentist until Covid. I have to get back on the wagon and make an appointment soon.
Thanks for the comment, Sarah. I suppose that dental health program in your school is exactly the kind of program the Regressives want to put on the chopping block. I'm glad you lived in an area where they thought investing in their children was important.
Me too, I'm glad we had such a good school program. I think they want to put all public schools on the chopping block. I don't know if you've heard the phrase "F*ck around and Find Out". This is a very popular trend where people talk about their associates- coworkers, friends, etc. who voted for Trump. I have seen many videos on YouTube about this trend. There was one about a special education teacher who voted for Trump. After voting, she finds out that her job is 100% paid by Federal grants. Guess what goes away once Trump is in office and cuts the department of education...those Federal grants. I'm grateful that my son is an adult, but I know several people who still have school aged kids.
I really don't think people can comprehend just how hard this is going to hit the working class. No one can really knows how bad it's going to be.
Totally agree, Sarah. Rich folks are going to be fine, just like always. Working class people, the poor, and those who always have been marginalized in this country are going to struggle. I still find it hard to believe so many people voted against their own interests because a dozen eggs costs more than they did a few years ago. Two big reasons for the election result, in my opinion, are misogyny and racism. I don’t know how we can overcome that, but we can’t stop trying.
